Assessment Checklist

The tester marks you on the official Traffic Police assessment checklist. Know how it works and you'll know where your points really go.

Immediate failures

Any one of these 22 items ends your test, however well the rest went. The number is the item on the form.

Narrow course

  • 2

    Mount kerb

    S-course, crank or DC

  • 3

    Require reverse movement

S-course or crank, once the free reverse and both 2-point boxes are used

  • 4

    Require additional reverse movement

DC, once the free reverse and both 2-point boxes are used

Parking

  • 7

    Mount kerb

    Parallel or vertical parking

  • 9

    Exceed stipulated time

Parallel over 5 minutes, vertical over 3 minutes

Slope / gradient

  • 12

    Roll backwards

    1 metre or more

  • 13

Unable to move off after 5 attempts

Moving / reversing up the ramp

  • 14

    Strike pole

  • 15

    Runoff ramp

  • 18

Unable to drive / reverse up ramp

    On the 4th attempt

Emergency stop

  • 21

Unable to stop within stipulated distance

Forward driving

  • 40

    Change lane without due care

  • 44

Fail to give way to Pedestrian at Pedestrian crossing

  • 45

    Drive across the centre line

  • 46

Fail to obey Mandatory / Prohibitory sign / Traffic Rule

  • 47

    Exceed speed limit

Fail to give way to traffic with right of way

Junction

  • 55

    Fail to stop at stop-line

  • 56

  • 57

Remain in the junction and cause obstruction

Traffic signal

  • 71

General

  • 72

Improper action causing accident / near accident

Free allowances

  • 2 free blind-spot misses

  • 1 free extra reverse in each of the S-course, crank and DC

  • 1 free delay in moving off and 1 free case of insufficient acceleration

  • 1 free wide turn, 1 free sharp turn and 1 free wrong position at a junction

  • 1 free missed mirror check before slowing down, 1 free before turning, and 1 free before changing lane or overtaking

  • 1 free unnecessary stop and 1 free failure to overtake when necessary

  • 1 free failure to brake while stationary

  • In the circuit, 2 free missed or wrong signals and 2 free uncancelled signals. On the road, 1 free each for a late, missed or wrong, and uncancelled signal

The costliest mistakes

  • 10 points: striking the kerb, stopping on a pedestrian crossing, slow reaction to danger

  • 8 points: not taking precaution for pedestrians or cyclists, not enough side clearance, causing others to slow or swerve, proceeding on amber

  • 6 points: road hogging, tailgating, changing lane at a bend, not slowing for hazards, inconveniencing cross traffic

What the form doesn't tell you

  • Kerbs outside a course are an IF. Striking a course or lot kerb is the 10-point "strike kerb"; striking any other kerb fails you. The one learners hit most is the small kerb turning out of the start lot, before the circuit has even begun. One learner failed for it and said no instructor had warned them.

  • Corrections: the first one inside a course is free, then points; more than 3 in a narrow course is an IF. That matches the form.

  • Free boxes are real. You get 2 missed safety checks free before they cost 4 points each, and SSDC's result slip has a Free Count column.

  • Testers get out and look when they suspect a kerb strike, in the crank, VP or anywhere else, and sometimes ask you to get out and look too.

  • At the ramp, the tester moves the pole, getting out to remove it and again to put it back for the reverse. Hitting it is an IF.

  • Testers mark on a laptop, set up during the briefing, and the car records the test. Seeing the tester type mid-drive rattled one learner into 30+ points. It doesn't always mean a mark against you.

  • You may carry on after failing. Some testers let you finish as a "fake run" and tell you at the end; others stop and send you back.

  • The result slip shows where each fault happened, e.g. "SSDC circuit", "Woodlands Ind. Park E4", "Woodlands Ave 9 x Woodlands Ave 4", with its points, count and free count. Use it to plan your revision.

The full assessment checklist

Laid out like the form your tester holds, with the same item numbers. Tick it as you practise to see where your points go.

SSDC doesn't publish its own copy of the form. The Traffic Police use the same form at every centre, so this is the copy CDC publishes.

Class 3 / 3A FINAL Assessment Checklist

  • A penalty is indicated by a tick .
  • A tick in a circle indicates ‘Immediate Failure’.
  • A tick in a box carries demerit points shown beside the box.
  • A tick in a box with a diagonal line carries no demerit point.
  • One Immediate Failure or accumulation of 20 demerit points constitutes a failure.

Tap the boxes and circles to mark a mock test. Items 25, 27, 48, 65 are for Class 3 (manual cars) only.
